FSSAI CERTIFIED . LAB-VERIFIED ~90% A2 . NBAGR BADRI BREED . MAITOLI VILLAGE . BERINAG
Buranshvalley began with a simple, uncomfortable realisation in a city kitchen — and grew into a women-led mission to bring real Pahadi ghee back, and to keep our villages alive.
The name Buranshvalley is the exact ecosystem our ghee comes from. Our village, Maitoli in Berinag (Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand), sits deep inside ancient forests of buransh (rhododendron) and banj oak. These oak forests act like natural sponges — holding water in their roots, keeping the earth moist and fertile.
Because of that natural moisture, the grass our cows graze on grows wild and free of chemical fertiliser. When our Badri and desi cows roam freely in this cool, stress-free environment — grazing on pristine grass and wild herbs — the medicinal essence of the forest flows straight into their milk.
After finishing my studies, I lived in metro cities for nearly ten years. For everyday cooking I bought brand after brand of commercial ghee — even the expensive, premium ones. And every single time I opened one of those jars, something was missing. The taste and aroma of the ghee made back home in the hills was simply unmatched.
That processed city ghee made me realise the true worth of our native Pahadi ghee for the first time. Growing up, we never understood its value — in the mountains, ghee was never a thing to be traded.
If a family’s cow wasn’t giving milk, the neighbours simply shared theirs — no money, no counting. And when the need reversed, so did the giving. But times changed. Today far fewer families rear cows in the hills; many have migrated to the plains, leaving their roots behind. That migration — palayan — is the quiet emptying of our villages.
For the consumer: we’re replacing the flood of fake, chemically processed, low-nutrition ghee that dominates the market — so that 100% authentic, traditionally hand-churned Pahadi ghee reaches every person who truly needs it.
For the community: we’re empowering the women of our village who are still rooted to this soil — not just with sustainable livelihood, but with support that helps secure their families’ future, right where they belong.
Buranshvalley is a tight-knit group of five women-led households in Maitoli, who still rear cows with love and churn ghee the old way. For them, it’s more than work — it’s a shared space away from the isolation of daily chores, a place to lean on each other and build something together.
Every jar is hand-churned at source over a wood fire — small batches, real hands, real time. Nothing added, nothing hidden, lab-verified every batch.
Quality isn’t a choice — it’s our law. From the grass our cows forage to the final sealed jar, we keep an unbroken chain of freshness and purity.
More than a business — a community sanctuary for our women, and an honest relationship with the people who eat what we make.
Our success is measured by the economic and social resilience of our Pahadi families — not just by jars sold.
We’re starting with five families in one village. But the blueprint is built for the long run — next, the surrounding high-altitude villages, bringing sustainable livelihood to their soil too. The goal is simple and stubborn: to slowly reverse palayan across our region, one village at a time.
Meet the village and the makers, understand the Badri breed, watch the bilona method, or read how we prove purity — every claim on this site is something you can check.
One jar — a named village, a native breed, a lab report. If it isn’t the realest ghee you’ve had, tell us.
